Inner-mountain Cartography - from Surveying towards Information Systems

چکیده
Karstand cave-systems are complex, 3-dimensional phenomena. Mapping and visualizing them represents a challenge to cartographers, morphologists and computer-graphics-specialists. Surveying and sketching of cave-maps as well as the construction of 3D-cave-models (incl. geology) are important parts of cave exploration and research. Besides supporting the efforts of speleologists, cave maps and 3D-models provide geologists and hydrologists with a better insight into the geological and tectonic structure of a given mountain range. This contribution deals with the computer-assisted generation of 2D cave maps and illustrates one possible implementation of a 3D cave information system. It is important to emphasize that neither a 2D-map nor a 3D-model is able to appropriately represent the complex structure of cave systems and their surrounding geology. In combination with observations in related disciplines (e.g. geology, hydrology, morphology, climate research, ...) they help to better arrange the "puzzle" of complex cave systems and understand their genesis.

Mountain cartography in Canada is challenged by limited human resources relative to a large land mass and in many areas, a limited number of potential users. The development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the generation of digital data have enabled the design and production of some maps in the westernmost province of British Columbia (BC), without the high cost and training associa...
متن کامل3d Buildings Modelling Based on a Combination of Techniques and Methodologies
Three dimensional architectural models are more and more important for a large number of applications. Specialists look for faster and more precise ways to generate them. This paper discusses methods to combine methodologies for handling data acquired from multiple sources: maps, terrestrial laser and additional measurements, together with digital images for the purpose of generating the 3D vis...

Geomatics, composed of the disciplines of geopositioning, mapping and the management of spatially oriented data by means of computers, has recently evolved as a new discipline from the integration of surveys and mapping (geodetic engineering) curricula, merged with the subjects of remote sensing and geographic information systems. Geomatics has become open to value added applications in many ot...
